和pericope比较起来，periscope似乎是中国学生更加熟悉的一个单词。前者是摘节、摘录的意思，后者是展望镜的意思。注意periscope和telescope的区别。尽管这两种仪器都能看到远方的东西，也都有看到一定范围（scope）的意思，Periscope是一种光学仪器，通过periscope，我们能看到被障碍物挡住的前景。而telescope不过是普通的放大镜，中文翻译成望远镜。
和periscope在外形上十分相近的pericope在《圣经》学习中常常被人提到，这是因为《圣经》是一本由很多小节组成的手稿按照时间顺序组合在一起的。Pericope的意思就是从一本书里摘出来的文字（A selection from a book）。它来自拉丁文pericope和希腊文perikope 。Peri-表示"环绕"（around）的意思，koptein表示"切"（to cut）的意思。
《圣经》里的小节（pericope）有时小到只有一句话，有的却由十数句诗歌或俳句等组成，很具有文学审美价值。对于学者们来说，《圣经》里的各种pericope提供了丰富的同义词源。
关于pericope，Anu Garg给了一个繁杂的例子。请原谅，这是AWAD一贯的风格，可能是因为AWAD面向的读者群比较高知吧：
"Act now while the supply lasts, and you can buy a rare facsimile of an 11th-century, illuminated German manuscript for only $16,425. After March 15, the price will rise to $19,205.
