这三个英语单词（gourmand, glutton,
gourmet）的含义从贬到褒排列。十五世纪，gourmand是被当作一桩坏事物引进英文的，成为英文原有的glutton一词的同义词，表示无止境地贪吃者。到了十九世纪，英国人又从法文中引进了gourmet一词。这个时候，gourmand和glutton两个词近朱者赤，在词意上的贬义变得轻了许多。从那以后，gourmand这个单词的贬义越来越淡，直到仅仅表示喜欢大吃大喝的人，而glutton就没有那么幸运，至今仍然和口水（slobbering）紧密相连，逃脱不了一幅难看的吃相。
